Wieso haben Sie sich damals für Ihr Studienfach entschieden?

I am very interested in foreign languages and cultures, especially Romance languages. I learned French at school and discovered how much I enjoyed it. I love reading French books and learning about the country and its culture. I also think the language sounds beautiful, and I wanted to use my studies to improve my language skills even further so that I could eventually work and live in the country.

An welchen Stellen haben sich die Erwartungen an Ihr Studienfach erfüllt, an welchen nicht?

I think it's great that the programme gives you such a good overview of French literature and linguistic history. However, I think it's a bit disappointing that you don't get to speak French very often, as most of the classes are taught exclusively in German. But I do like the fact that the morphology classes refresh and expand your grammar and vocabulary.

Was macht Ihnen in Ihrem Fach am meisten Spaß?

I really enjoy the field of French literary history. I find it interesting to learn about the different eras and the many authors. It's also really great that you can choose which topics you want to explore in more depth in the form of seminars and lectures, depending on your interests.

Was war bisher die größte Herausforderung?

Passing the morphology course exams was not easy for me. In addition to studying, you have to spend a lot of time learning vocabulary and grammar in order to pass. But if you give it your best, you can do it.

Was wollen Sie einmal damit werden?

I'm not sure yet. I'll just see how things go. Ideally, I'd like to work in print media or public relations, but if it comes down to it, I could always go into teaching.

Welche Tipps geben Sie den Leuten, die auch überlegen, Ihr Fach zu studieren?

If you enjoy the French language, culture and history, then join us at RUB and study with us! Don't worry about the grammar part of the course, because firstly, it's only a small part of it, and secondly, if I managed it, you can too. As for language skills: if you paid reasonably close attention in class, you should be classified as B1 and be able to participate in all courses right away. I've seen some people really stressing themselves out about this and cramming like crazy – to you: it's only half as bad and half as difficult as you think! The lecturers are all lovely, kind people – you really don't need to be shy about asking if you want something explained in more detail or if you haven't understood something.
